This Sunday February 15, the Bishop will preside over the Annual Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass for couples who are celebrating their 1st through 5th, 25th, 40th, and 50+ years of marriage at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph. During the Mass the couples will have the opportunity to renew their marriage vows.
Although some may regard the renewal of marriage vows as something purely symbolic, it is nonetheless a significant event in the life of the couple renewing their vows. The renewal of promises or vows is an opportunity to reaffirm one’s commitment to continue to keep and live out those promises or vows a little bit deeper and fuller.
Baptized Catholics renew their baptismal promises every year during the Easter Season. By so doing, we recommit ourselves to following the Lord more faithfully. Priests renew their ordination promises every year during the Chrism Mass. By so doing they recommit themselves to be conformed more fully to Christ the High Priest. Couples who renew their marriage vows rededicate themselves to continue to love their spouse a little bit more deeply, to continue to sacrifice for the sake of their spouse daily, etc. The renewing one’s marriage vows is also a very effective reminder to the couple and all those present of the significance of the Sacrament of Matrimony and how the power of God has brought the couple to such a milestone.
To those who are married, as you celebrate your marriage anniversary this year, may it be a reminder of God’grace and goodness in your lives. May God give you the grace to persevere in your vocation, and may your marriage be a sign of Christ’s union with His Church.
Congratulations to the couples who will renew their marriage vows this Sunday at the Cathedral!
