The Church teaches that “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit… and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213) The fruit of Baptism or baptismal grace includes forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins, birth into the new life by which the baptized becomes an adoptive child of the Father, a member of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. (CCC, 1279)
In his conversation with Nicodemus in the third chapter of John, Jesus affirms the necessity of Baptism. He says “no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” (John 3:5) Being born of water and Spirit involves Baptism. As He was ascending to heaven, Jesus commissioned His disciples. He told them: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Prior to this event, Jesus had warned His disciples, “without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” (Matthew 10:8)
Because of all the above reasons, the centrality and necessity of Baptism, and the invitation to give freely what we have received freely, I have made the pastoral decision to remove any fees associated with Baptism. There will no longer be a required fees or offering for Baptism for all those who seek Baptism at St. Cyprian Parish. However, the Parish will accept any donation that you may freely give to express your gratitude for the Baptism. But such donations will no longer be expected or required.
